EHDEN’s mission, to reduce the time needed to provide answers in real world health research, is being achieved through the creation of a large-scale, federated network of data partners across Europe who collaborate on research methodologies and education.

The ambitions of the EHDEN project are high – standardising more than 650 million patient records across Europe from different geographic areas and different data sources.

The mission and aspiration closely align with those of HDR UK and the Alliance who are delighted to be supporting this 7th Data Partner Call.

The data partners who make up the EHDEN consortium include professionals from academia, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, life sciences companies, regulatory authorities, and patients. Many of the existing 17 EHDEN UK Data Partners are members of the UK Health Data Research Alliance, including Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), Royal College of General Practitioners Research and Surveillance Centre, and SAIL Databank.

The current call has a €1.34 million combined budget. Mapping of data from partners in the consortium to the OMOP CDM will support the enhancement and acceleration of research and healthcare decision-making for public benefit.

Submissions will be accepted via the EHDEN website from 12:00 CET Wednesday 12th October to 17:00 CET Friday 11th November 2022.

Clinical Lead for DATA-CAN Chief Clinical Data Officer for HDRUK, Geoff Hall says:

“Leeds Teaching Hospitals were funded by EHDEN in October 2020 to support the implementation of the OMOP common data model within the Leeds Data Platform.

“We have been working with a UK-based SME to deliver this work and have also been assessing the OMOP conversation toolset developed within the HDRUK-funded CO-CONNECT programme.

“I am delighted that HDRUK have been able to offer additional funding to the final call from the EHDEN team to support data custodians across the UK to work towards adoption of the OMOP common data model. I hope that a number of UK teams take this opportunity to work with EHDEN and their approved SMEs.”

Nigel Hughes, Scientific Director, Epidemiology, Janssen Global R&D, and EHDEN Project Lead says:

“EHDEN has had a remarkable response to our Data Partner Calls to date, with some 405 applications and 166 selected in 26 countries. We are hoping for a similarly strong response for our 7th and final call, but also are delighted to be partnering with Health Data Research UK to support UK applicants. Together we have a shared vision of safely using real world, clinical data, to support evidence generation for research and R&D at scale, and our complementary initiatives are actively transforming the research agenda to ensure it is evidence today, and not in several tomorrows.”

Paola Quattroni, Head of Alliance Strategy and Engagement (Interim), HDR UK says:

“Driving best practice and adoption of common standards for health data is a key focus for Health Data Research UK and the UK Health Data Research Alliance. We are delighted to be partnering with EHDEN for this call, and hope to see many UK data custodians join this initiative to enable international health data research and collaboration.”
