Health Data Research UK’s (HDR UK) Understanding Causes of Disease national research priority will benefit from the Cambridge Services for Data Driven Discovery (CSD3) – A national data intensive science cloud for converged simulation, AI and analytics, as part of a £10m investment recently announced by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The CSD3 and HDR UK partnership will support the secure analysis of linked electronic health record (EHR) and multi-omic datasets to transform disease classification from an approach based on symptoms and pathology to one founded in the molecular causes of disease.

Conducting these analyses requires a trusted research environment (TRE), in which EHR data can be safely processed, alongside access to high performance computing (HPC) facilities. CSD3 has been set up as part of a UK-wide effort to improve supercomputing services to drive scientific breakthroughs. It is being led by investment from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), as well as the Science and Technology Facilities Council, Medical Research Council and UK Atomic Energy Authority.
