Dr Susheel Varma is HDR UK’s Director of Engineering to provide technology leadership and delivery of all technology infrastructure projects in HDR UK including the Health Data Innovation Gateway (Gateway) and the development of a network of federated Trusted Research Environments (TRE).

Currently seconded as the National Digital Research Technical Lead to DARE UK to develop the strategic and technical blueprints for an open, secure federated and interoperable ecosystem of TREs across UKRI investments. He also provides alignment to HDR UK’s international strategy across HDR UK’s portfolio of research hubs, (meta)data alliance, training and infrastructure projects.

Fellow of the British Computer Society and the Software Sustainability Institute. Lifetime Fellow of the Software Sustainability Institute and a member of the Society of Research Software Engineers. Member of the Technology Advisory Board at Our Future Health. He has published a number of research works and is an invited keynote speaker at national and international academic, industry, healthcare and inter-governmental conferences.

Graduated from Pondicherry University with a degree in Information Technology and a Master’s in Advanced Software Engineering and a doctorate in Computational Systems Biology from the University of Sheffield. Completed a Executive MBA in the management of Research Infrastructures from the University of Milan-Bicocca.

He subsequently pursued a post-doctorate career in healthcare informatics with a focus on Medical Physics and In-silico modelling. He has been part of numerous European Commission and Research Councils UK funded projects and was a core member of the VPH-Share project leading the development of scientific workflows in multiple clinical research domains. Lead architect of GIMIAS and the VPH-Dare@IT platform for Dementia research and Translational Technology Officer (CTO) of CISTIB.

He was also the Human Genomics and Translational Data Platform Coordinator at ELIXIR, he leveraged his broad operating range to lead the development and operations of a portfolio of core infrastructure activities in EMBL-EBI to align with European Research Infrastructures – EMBL, ELIXIR & EOSC and international activities – GA4GH, where he continues co-lead four international standards in Genomics & Healthcare.
