Professor David Newby is British Heart Foundation Duke of Edinburgh Chair of Cardiology at the University of Edinburgh. He led the SCOT-HEART trial which demonstrated that a CT scan could diagnose and treat heart disease better. Using electronic health records data, the trial team went on to demonstrate that these improvements resulted in a major reduction in the number of future heart attacks. CT scans are now recommended as the first line test of choice for these patients. Professor Newby continues to use electronic health records data to deliver several ongoing innovative trials that will influence how we treat and prevent heart disease in the future.
