A national COVID-19 monitoring platform called EAVE II (Early Pandemic Evaluation and Enhanced Surveillance of COVID-19), was set up during the pandemic to support Scotland’s response to COVID-19. The data is housed in Public Health Scotland’s Trusted Research Environment, where they are analysed by trained and accredited analysts.

This project aims to extend EAVE II to discover who is most at risk of serious outcomes if they develop an infection in their airways over the winter period. With the NHS likely to come under severe pressure throughout winter, there is an urgent need to know what emergency care people are likely to need. By identifying the people at highest risk of serious outcomes who may need, for example, hospital admission or use of a ventilator, it may be possible to intervene early to improve outcomes and reduce the pressure on our NHS. This project will provide key information urgently required by policymakers and NHS leaders.
